In Second Grade your child will continue on a wonderful educational journey. We will build on what your child has already learned by exploring key concepts in the following subject areas:
Language Arts: Students will be exposed to a variety of literature genres and they will learn to apply this knowledge to their own writing. Through literature they will explore and develop a deeper understanding of grammar components as well. We will focus more heavily on reading comprehension skills and fluency. Students will be expexted to read nightly to build skills and Accelerated Reader points.
Math: We will build on current addition and subtraction concepts. Children will explore concepts through word problems, tables & graphs, measurements, including time & money, manipulatives and technology. Mid-year students will learn concepts of geometry, multiplication and division.
Science & Health: Students will learn the Scientific Process by making predictions, recording data, and analyzing results. Second grade curriculum includes: States of matter, energy, Pushes & Pulls, Moon and Celestial Bodies and the changes in life cycles of plants and animals. In health we will discuss nutrition, growth and development, disease prevention and safety. Children will experience hands-on experiments as well as reading National Geographic literature to meet standards.
Social Studies: The students will be introduced to historical figures in Georgia, the Creek and Cherokee cultures and the development of civilizations and their contributions. Themes of economics, map skills and civics will all be explored as well. Supplemental materials from National Geographic literature and Weekly Reader will support our teaching of the social studies standards. Second grade students will be assigned homework Monday through Thursday. Agendas are provided, as well as a Monday letter prepared by me. Second grade homework should take approximately 15 minutes each night. Students will also be assigned an additional 15-20 minutes of reading each night and their reading log will need to be filled out each week. On Monday nights, part of the student's homework is to review my Monday Newsletter contents with a parent. The Monday Newsletter contains vital information and will come home in the homework folder. We expect that children are here, ready to learn every day ~ attendance is critical! Children will actively participate daily in their own learning. We expect that our students will behave in a way that does not disrupt the learning of others. Respect and good character will be stressed in all classrooms. We know that for the school year to be as successful as possible, it will require a partnership between the classroom teacher, your child and yourself. We look forward to a wonderful year! |
