What's The Buzz? - Week of August 29th

 Bee2_2

We have had a busy 2 weeks of school! This week we are starting addition. Please practice addition facts to 10 with your child. In writing, we are working on using a capital at the beginning of a sentence and putting a period at the end. We will begin studying continents and oceans in Social Studies.

Thursday is Open House! There will be a short PTSA meeting in the cafeteria and immediately following you can come to my room where I will give you important 1st grade information.

Picture Day is on Friday, Sept. 9th and our Back to School Luau is that evening from 6:30-8:30.

I'm Karen Kennard.  I have been teaching for 17 years.  I have taught 4th grade, Kindergarten, and 1st grade for 12 years.  I have been at Baker Elementary for 15 years.  I was born in France and grew up in Puerto Rico.  I have lived in Illinois and New York.  I have been in Georgia since 1991 and love it! I have a son, Christopher, who is a senior in high school and a daughter, Nicole, who is a junior.  They were both Baker Bears! I love to read, travel and of course, teach!!!

SIGHT WORD PRACTICE

Here are 4 powerpoint presentations or computerized flashcards that you can use at home to help with learning our required sight words. You can time the presentation to go through the cards at a certain rate, or go from slide to slide as you need them.

Remember that children should be reading these words quickly or fluently and not sounding them out. If it takes them more than 4 seconds to read the word, they do not know it "by sight".

You can also print each presentation as a handout with 6 slides, making your own flashcards. Choose this option when you print, there should be options at the bottom of the print window. Be careful, it will print out individual, large slides if handout is not chosen. Feel free to ask me about this if you need help!

What's the BUZZ this week?

Bee2_2                                                                     Bee2a

It has been a great first week of school. We have been busy bees! We have been getting to kow each other and learning the class rules. We are working on tens and ones in math up to 30. We are learning about different ways to represent numbers. We have been concentrating on sounding out our words in our writing and writing in lower case letters except when a capital is needed.  In phonics we are learning to blend words and are reviewing sounds. We are learning about syllables. In science, we are learning about different types of weather. The kids are doing great!  If you have any questions , feel free to send in a note or contact me by email at karen.kennard@cobbk12.org

Thank you for your prompt response on everything I send home!
