Welcome to 5th grade!! This will be an amazing year for you and your child. I am looking forward to getting to know you each student and parent on a personal level.
The year will fly by very quickly. Let's make every minute count. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any question or concerns. You may email me at Jeff.McFather@cobbk12.org
Reading
We will be reading a biography, Freedom Train, during the first nine weeks. This is the story of Harriet Tubman, a slave, who escaped and helped others to freedom as well. Her exciting life will thrill students as they read of her encounters along the Underground Railroad.
The students will have several opportunities to respond to the literature through writing and art work. We will listen to spirituals and complete writing assignments to deepen our understanding of the Civil War and slavery.
Math
Students will get a quick review of place value, addition, subtracion, mulitiplication, and division of whole numbers. From there, students will learn decimal place value through the thousandths place. We will continue our nine weeks with Number Characteristics and Algebra. Finally, mulitiplication and division with decimals will be introduced.
Social Studies
The Civil War will be our first unit of study. Reading and social studies will be integrated in the first nine weeks. We will highlight the basic causes of the Civil War, major battles, and the Reconstruction efforts.
Science
Science will begin the last half of the marking period. Mrs. Boyles will be teaching my class science. Constructive and Destructive Forces are the major topics during this grading period.
Writing
This nine weeks the students will be learning how to write a narrative piece of writing. We will read and evaluate as well as write narrative pieces of writing. One narrative piece will involve writing as though your were a slave running to freedom.
