Mrs. Verner

Ga00019cpalmettoestybeeislandsavannahgeo I have been a kindergarten teacher at Baker for 10 years.  I have taught in different schools in Georgia and South Carolina for 20 years.  I have been married to Steve for 30 years.  We have 3 children:  Caroline, Everett and Christine.  I enjoy gardening and growing roses.  I also enjoy cooking, sewing and reading.  My favorite place to go is to Tybee Island near Savannah.  I was born in Savannah and I guess I've just got sand in my blood.   I graduated from UGA.  I love the Bulldogs and cheer them on every chance I get.

Beginning year 2010-11-2 009
Thanks to all who have  brought in their small pumpkins .  We will be weighing and measuring them tomorrow so it is not too late to send one in on Tuesday.

I changed the letter of the week to Ss this week as we were studying Spiders.  Next week we will do the sound of Cc as in Kk.  Please send in your Ss pictures by Thursday so we can do our Alphabet books on Thursday.  We have some pumpkin activities planned for Friday.

Please be aware of the Red Ribbon activities that are happening this week.  There is a red sheet in their backpacks explaining the weeks activities.  Everyone wore crazy socks today to "sock it to drugs".   I sent the list out last week so you could be prepared.

This is the last week this fall to send in Box tops, Campbell's and Tyson's labels.  The contest will start again next week.  The class with the most by Friday will win an ice cream party.  Send them in with a label w/ my name in a baggy.

Tomorrow is the last day for sending in pennies, nickels and dimes for "relay for life".  Send in any pennies you would like to donate to the cancer society.

We will be studying shapes and do some more patterning in the next few weeks.  If you would be able to cut out some shapes at home for us please reply to this email and I will send some pages home for you to cut out.

Thanks so much for your support this year.  We are having a great year.  We have had extra snacks donated and anything I have requested has been sent in.  Once again thank you.

Our Kennesaw state student, Brittany Boyer comes in tomorrow and will be with us for 5 weeks, every day.  We look forward to having her and working with her.  The children really enjoy her one-on-one attention.

Don't forget tonight is McDonald's night for Baker Relay-for -life.

Thursday night is Spooky Bingo here at Baker.  If you didn't order supper you can still come at 6:30 and play bingo.

Enclosed photos show you how we learn to count in October.

September News

It's hard to believe we have been in school for 22 days. The letters we will be focusing on are Hh, Ii, Mm and Aa. Don't forget to send in the cut out pictures each week. We had 100% returned this week which is awesome. We are learning rhyming words. You can play rhyming games and have your child come up with words that rhymes. They have a hard time hearing the sounds and how they are alike. Example red/bed or black/snack

We are saying good by to Jakob McGraw today as he is moving to Sedalia Park Elementary. Good luck to him and his family. We'll miss him.

We will be finishing up our study of animals next week. We will study the changes in the season, Apples , farms and scarecrows for the remainder of the month.

In social studies we will study about where we live, address and phone #. We have studied the American Flag and will look at the Georgia Flag. The Pledge of Allegiance has been learned by all . We will work on the Star Spangled Banner all year. Ask your child about Labor Day. We talked about it yesterday and today.

In math we will be learning the numbers 1-10 and the ordinals first thru tenth. They need to write the numerals correctly, match objects to the number and recognize each numeral by name out of order. We have learned the value of a penny and now we will learn about nickels. We will learn how to trade 5 pennies for a nickel.

I am sending home a baggy with the first set of sight words already cut out in pairs. You can play match games with them. They need to know 10 of the words by the end of the first quarter. Look for them in their book bags on Tuesday.

Please continue to return library books when they are finished. I try to take them for another one as soon as it is returned.

Have a restful weekend and holiday and I'll look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

Tuesday Tales- August 24

Tomorrow is early release. We will begin releasing at 12:15. If your child has transportation changes please let me know in writing. We eat lunch at 9:35 tomorrow. You don't need to send a snack.

Our letter this week is the short Oo sound. I am not sending a homework bag for pictures. We will use stamps as it is hard to find short o pictures that begin with o. You can begin to look for pictures of things that start with the P sound.

Please don't send cookies, donuts, honey buns or candy for snack. Send in something healthy if your can.

Thank you to all of you that have sent in snacks, popcorn and crackers for math sorting. We have enough for now. I will let you know when we run out. It is so nice to have parents who send in things when we need them. This is going to be a great year! Thanks for all your support so far.

Letter of the week

Our letter of the week is Tt. I am sending a labeled baggy home with each student. Each week you need to send in several cut-out pictures from a magazine or a catalogue. If you don't have any let me know and I'll be glad to send some old ones of mine for you to use and keep at home. Please ask your child each week what the letter of the week is. I will post it on my blog, but it would be great if they could remember to tell you. Please return the baggy with pictures each week.

Thursday Thoughts on August 12 from Mrs. Verner

Tomorrow night the 13th of August will be the PTA back to school night. I hope you are all planning to attend. It goes from 6:30 - 8:00. It is a good way to get to know other children and parents.

Next Tuesday night is our "Open House" at Baker. I hope you all plan to attend. I look forward to going over procedures and expectations with you. We have started the year off well and I look forward to meeting with you all. It will start at 6:00 in the cafeteria. I will have some of your children's work posted for you to admire. They are working hard.

We will have an early release day on August 25, a Wednesday. We will begin dismissal at 12:15. If your child will not go home the same way as they do every other day please send me a note in writing

of any change. They will still eat lunch at school before leaving.

Our specials rotation is PE, Art, Music then Salsa. It rotates like that all year. It is better if they wear athletic tennis shoes every day. Sandals are not allowed at PE and our playground is very rocky. Please put shorts under any dresses or skirts on the girls.

Don't forget to check folders every night and return them the next day. Send any transportation changes in writing.

Have a great weekend and I'll see you on Tuesday night.
