Another awesome week in room 535!
When we return from the break we will do a review of social studies standards from this marking period (Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Bald Eagle, Statue of Liberty, and Thanksgiving).
In math we will continue with measurement. We will review comparing and ordering by length, height, and capacity. We will learn how to compare and order by weight, too. Putting the objects in order (shortest to tallest, holds the least to the most, lightest to heaviest, etc.) is sometimes difficult. Practice at home with household items (toys, cups, bowls, shoes, etc).
The kids are doing great with their letter sounds. For this marking period the kids need to know the 23 consonant sounds. Short vowel sounds will be added 3rd quarter. Practice blending the letter sounds with the phonics homework.
I have sent home writing paper to be used over the break. Please have your child write about something they did over the break. I am not looking for correct spelling (if they do it's a bonus!), but phonetic spelling is important. I want them to write down the letter sounds they hear. Encourage them to write more than one sentence using finger spaces between words, a capital letter at the beginning and a period at the end. Give lots of praise for their hard work. When we return from the break they can share with the class.
The kids have had a great three months of school and are deserving of a nice, long break! Mrs. Christian and I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are so thankful for the 18 children we have the privilege to teach and spend our days with!
Happy Thanksgiving!!

What a crazy week! Looking forward to getting back to our regular schedule next week!
We had a wonderful visit on Wednesday from Firefighter Jacob! He taught us how to get out of a fire safely and what to do if our clothes caught on fire. He told the kids that their meeting place should be at the mailbox, so you might want to practice this in your fire escape plan. He also told the kids that it was very important for them to learn their address in case they ever had to dial 9-1-1! This will be one of the things I assess for the 3rd quarter, but it is never too early to start working on it!
This week in social studies we began to compare pilgrim children’s lives long ago with children’s lives today. Next week we will continue with our social studies theme of Thanksgiving. We also will work more with two of our country’s symbols: the Statue of Liberty and the Bald Eagle.
We write daily in the classroom, each child learning to write based on where they are in the writing process. Please talk with your child about things they can write about. We are trying to make interesting stories, instead of simple “I see” sentences. If you talk to them about ideas they can write about this will help them. Talk about a trip you took, their favorite game to play, what you do as a family, etc.
Next week we will start a new unit in math – measurement. The children will learn to group objects according to common properties such as longer/shorter, more/less, taller/shorter, and heavier/lighter. We will be comparing objects based on length, height, weight and capacity. We will also continue to review shapes and counting and labeling sets.
It was so nice to see so many of you at the Friends and Family Lunch on Wednesday. The kids were so excited to eat with you!
Happy Veteran's Day!!

It is hard to believe it is already November!! We have been very busy in the classroom. There is so much to learn before our November break!!
We began talking about Thanksgiving this week. Next week we will continue with the social studies theme of Thanksgiving. Look for some Indians roaming the halls at our Friends and Family Luncheon! We also will learn about Veteran’s Day and two American symbols – the bald eagle and the Statue of Liberty.
In science we continue to learn about day and night. Over the weekend make observations with your child about things they see in the day sky and in the night sky.
In language arts we have been working on breaking up words in to their small parts or syllables. Make it a game at home to say words and count out how many syllables are in the word. We use our fingers to count syllables on our palms. Ask the kids to show you. They are catching on to it, but it does take practice. The one syllable words are really difficult. Remind the kids to say the word just like they would say it if they were using it in a sentence.
In math we will continue studying shapes. We have talked about the square, circle, rectangle, triangle, oval, hexagon, octagon, pentagon, sphere, cube, cone, and pyramid. Ask the kids if they can spot shapes around them in your home, driving in the car, at the baseball fields, etc. Next week we will put shapes together to make pictures. We also have been working on counting and labeling sets 0-20. Please review the numbers 11-20 with your child. Give them objects to count and have them write down the corresponding number. Remind them it matters what order you write the numbers - a 9 in front of the 1 is 91 not 19. I tell them the “teen” numbers always have a 1 in the front. As soon as they hear “teen” they know to put a 1 first.
We have had many students forget their snacks lately. While I try and provide something for the children, my snacks sometimes run out. I would like to suggest that you send in a large baggie with your child’s name on it filled with 5 snacks for the week. Please do not send in more than 5, we do not have storage for more snacks. The children eat just one snack a day in the classroom. You can still send in a snack each day, but I cannot guarantee that there will be a snack from me should you forgot the snack.
Also, we go outside every morning at 10:00 am weather permitting. If it is 40 degrees or higher and not raining we will be on the playground. Please be sure to send a coat with your child every day.
Hope to see you all at the Friends and Family Lunch on Wednesday!
