Welcome back to the 2015-2016 school year at Baker

I'm so excited to start another great school year!  We will be starting off finding our way around the school, meeting our classmates and learning about each other.  We will be going over our speech rules and our speech helpers. We will be having a scavenger hunt around the room and finding classroom objects that we use every day.  We will be reading Llama llama misses mama and if you take a mouse to school.

**Thanksgiving**

These last two weeks we have focused on healthy foods by describing them by size, color and taste.  We listened to the story "RUN TURKEY RUN" and had fun acting out the story and "Thanks for thanksgiving" which is a brightly colored illustrated book about the simple things we should be thankful for.  We learned the "Turkey pokey" a song about following directions and named traditional/non traditional foods for thanksgiving.  I'm sharing a list of preschool books that focus on actions.

Have a great holiday

13 Books with Actions

We have handpicked 13 picture books for preschoolers focussing on action words (verbs).  When learning new vocabulary it helps to simplify everything else so that you can really emphasise the new word.  For this reason, although younger children may enjoy this list, we have specifically chosen simpler books that are still wonderfully engaging for kindy children with language delay.

Tips for reading

  • Read the books many times
  • Act out the verbs
  • Talk about the actions (not just reading the words)

Our criteria for choosing these books are;

  • Illustrations – clear and colourful line drawings.  We always make sure that the pages aren’t too busy in order to keep the focus on the words/concepts we are choosing to target.
  • Novelty Value –  tactile, pop up and lift the flap books can keep busy children on task for a bit longer.  Check our list of books that pop up, here.
  • Basic content –  toddlers and kindy children with language delay require more focus on useful vocabulary.  This is the time to focus on building useful vocabulary about foods, animals, clothes and the like.
  • Rhythm, intonation, pattern – rhyming books and those with lots of playsounds (whoosh, swish) are wonderful foundations for developing listening skills and pre-reading ability.
  • Authors – we have some favorite authors that you can always depend on for good quality kindy books.  These include Julia Donaldson, Alison Lester, Pamela Allen, Lucy Cousins, Jo Lodge, Nick Sharratt & Mick Inkpen.

**Under the sea*

During these last few weeks of school we are going to talk about the ocean, camping, and summer fun.  Here is a list of sites you might like to explore.  We are going to learn about ocean animals, (compare and contrast them) summer activities and camping.  I can't believe the year is coming to an end.  I will be sending home summer packets so keep on the lookout.

****Community helpers and the Circus***

Welcome back after Georgia's winter blast!!!

We will be completing our community helpers unit and introducing our farm unit.  We will be learning about different farm animals ( the sounds they make, colors, foods they eat, what they give us, farm equipment/tools). Drive by a farm AND talk about what you see

In Ms. Patty's room we will be talking about the circus and pets.  We will name/identify animals that could be pets, talk about size, color, foods they eat, where they live and demonstrate many actions (i.e dogs jump, bunnies hop).  take a trip to a pet store and talk about what you see.

***Winter and Hibernation**

The next few weeks in speech we will be talking about winter and hibernation.  We will be talking about winter clothing and comparing it to other seasons, winter activities (i.e building snowmen, drinking hot cocoa, sledding, skiing). I will be using many of the same books as Mrs. Liz, Mrs. Patty and Ms. Erika and taking a closer look at the actions and the main idea of each story.  We will be sequencing the events and playing different characters in the story.  The students will be making their own caves as we talk about hibernation. Stay warm!!

****FALL FUN****

The next few weeks we will be talking about fall vocabulary including squirrels, pumpkins, apples, leaves, scarecrows and Halloween.  We will be singing many songs and participating in many fingerplays about these items. These songs will come home so you can practice them over and over again. Repetition is key.  We will be reading "Going on a leaf hunt", "The big pumpkin", "Going to the pumpkin patch" and I will be using the books read in class to target all of our speech and langauge skills.  HAPPY FALL!!!!!!

**Transportation**

For the next couple of weeks I will be supporting the preschool theme "All about transportation".   We will be learning about the different vehicles we see on land, in the air and in the water.  Some of the activities we will be doing are looking at similarities/differences, looking at size, colors, function, parts/whole etc.  I will be using the books Freight train by Donald Crews and Roadwork by Sally Sutton.  The students will love acting out both stories.

At home label all the different vehicles you see on the road when you go for a car ride.
