These last two weeks we have focused on healthy foods by describing them by size, color and taste. We listened to the story "RUN TURKEY RUN" and had fun acting out the story and "Thanks for thanksgiving" which is a brightly colored illustrated book about the simple things we should be thankful for. We learned the "Turkey pokey" a song about following directions and named traditional/non traditional foods for thanksgiving. I'm sharing a list of preschool books that focus on actions.
Have a great holiday
13 Books with Actions
We have handpicked 13 picture books for preschoolers focussing on action words (verbs). When learning new vocabulary it helps to simplify everything else so that you can really emphasise the new word. For this reason, although younger children may enjoy this list, we have specifically chosen simpler books that are still wonderfully engaging for kindy children with language delay.
Tips for reading
- Read the books many times
- Act out the verbs
- Talk about the actions (not just reading the words)
Our criteria for choosing these books are;
- Illustrations – clear and colourful line drawings. We always make sure that the pages aren’t too busy in order to keep the focus on the words/concepts we are choosing to target.
- Novelty Value – tactile, pop up and lift the flap books can keep busy children on task for a bit longer. Check our list of books that pop up, here.
- Basic content – toddlers and kindy children with language delay require more focus on useful vocabulary. This is the time to focus on building useful vocabulary about foods, animals, clothes and the like.
- Rhythm, intonation, pattern – rhyming books and those with lots of playsounds (whoosh, swish) are wonderful foundations for developing listening skills and pre-reading ability.
- Authors – we have some favorite authors that you can always depend on for good quality kindy books. These include Julia Donaldson, Alison Lester, Pamela Allen, Lucy Cousins, Jo Lodge, Nick Sharratt & Mick Inkpen.
