I'm looking forward to working with you and your child!!

*COMMUNITY HELPERS*

The next few weeks we will be learning about community helpers.  We will talk about their uniforms/clothing that helps us identify who they are, play matching games with hats and tools, discuss how they help us, where we find them and role play things they would say.  I will be reading Career Day by Anne Rockwell, Whose hat is this and Whose tools are these by Sharon Cooper.  I will be using many powerpoint activities/crafts/snacks to enhance their understanding of many community helpers.

A trip to the zoo

Happy new year to you all!!!!! I hope you had a restful holiday break

In Mrs. Karen Winne/Brandi O'Reilly & Mrs. Liz Schneider's class

The next few weeks we will be focusing on zoo animals.  I will be using the books peek-a-zoo (the students have to guess what animal is hiding by looking at the color, size, and features) and Let's go to the zoo by Fisher price (the students will count the animals, look at colors, actions, learn the names of baby animals, and have fun lifting all the flaps to see what surprises await.  We will be comparing farm/zoo/ocean animals and making animal snacks.

In Mrs. Patty daniel's class we will be focusing on Polar bears and animals that sleep in the winter.  We will be reading and learning about the animals in the book "Polar bear, polar bear what do you hear?".  We will learn to identify the sounds they make and match non-identical pictures using real life pictures, clip art pictures and boardmaker symbols.  We will be describing the animals by size, color and features.

DOWN ON THE FARM/ALL ABOUT FALL

In speech and language we have been learning all about farm animals (the sounds they make, what they eat, products they give us, and their colors).  We also learned who works on the farm and about what grows on the farm.  This has tied nicely with the season of fall.  We talked about what happens in the fall (leaves changing colors, picking apples and pumpkins, and the weather getting colder).  Next week we will talk about the giving farm and have the opportunity to try things that come from a farm.

At home find some leaves and talk about them (include the color, shape, size, if they are the same/different, what kind of tree they come from).  We will be making a scarecrow and trying different apples with yummy toppings.

Transportation

We have been traveling around the room with many different vehicles. We know the names of vehicles, can identify the vehicle upon hearing its sound, and can talk about their similarities and differences and where they travel (i.e land, sea, air).  We have learned many new vocabulary words including stop, go, traffic light, road, seatbelt, and motor.  There are too many to name.

What you can do at home

Take a car ride and have your child look out the window and name the vehicles that he/she sees, identify the sounds, and look at the street signs.

All about Me using our body parts!!

This week we are exploring our body parts and talking about what we could do with them. We just finished talking about all the actions you can do with your hands (i.e clap, rub, pet, pat, wave, reach, tickle).  We had fun demonstrating all of these actions through music and movement. We will continue to work on body parts and the 5 senses.  The students will see, hear, taste, touch, and smell many different things.

For practice at home go for a walk with your child and talk about all the things around you using the 5 senses.

Mrs. Goggins' Preschool Speech super stars

Welcome back to an incredible new school year!! I hope all of you had a relaxing and rejuvenating summer.  My name is Michele Goggins and I have been a speech therapist for over 14 years primarily working with the preschool population.  This is my second year here at Baker.  I received my masters in Speech Pathology from Kean University, New Jersey.  I also have extensive expereince working in early intervention;birth to three.  When I'm not working I enjoy spending time with my husband Sean and two daughters Ciara, age 6 and Cheyenne, age 4.  I'm looking forward to working with your child this year and watching the children blossom in speech and language skills.  Communication through email is best since I check my email daily. My email at Baker is [email protected]. Please check my blog as it will be updated with wonderful speech and language activities that you could do at home.
